Wapiti Campground is located along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway about 30 miles west of Cody and 22 miles east of the east entrance to the park. It hosts 41 campsites on the North Fork of the Shoshone River, some with units that include electricity. It’s next to the historic Wapiti Ranger Station and a trailhead from the campground leads into the Washakie Wilderness. Although we’re making fun of the signage here, make sure you follow it! Yellowstone can be dangerous, with boiling and acidic water, crusty ground, wild animals. Stay far away from wild animals and observe from a distance. Stay on marked paths, too, as ground can be uneven or give away. Certainly stick around to catch Old Faithful doing what it does best, but don’t forget that there are trails, geysers, pools, and other features all around that area.

There are approximately 300 backcountry campsites in the park, some of which are available through advance reservations. Backcountry camping permits may be obtained only in person, and no more than 48 hours in advance of your trip, at one of the park’s backcountry offices. Firewood, food, and ice can be purchased at the convenience store, and camping supplies, souvenirs, and more are available in the gift shop, both located in the main lodge. All campgrounds operated by Yellowstone National Park Lodges have restrooms with cold water and flush toilets. If a reservation is made that includes dates beyond the maximum booking window, that reservation cannot be changed until 18 days have passed from the original booking date. If a visitor wants to switch dates that are entirely outside of the original reservation dates, there is a $10 change fee. The Headwaters area is a prime location for wildlife watching and photography. Walk along the banks of Polecat Creek through wildflower meadows and conifer forests to capture that perfect photo of a beaver, moose, elk, bison, bear, or birds.
